VARIETY SHOW OF HEARTS TELETHON | FEB 12 |
  • Date/Time: Feb.12 at 9:00 am – 11:00pm
  • Location: Hard Rock Theatre, Coquitlam
  • Variety’s Show of Hearts Telethon needs our help in collecting pledges and answering calls!
  • Proceeds will be going to The Children’s Charity
    One of our members is offering to give a ride to Hard Rock Casino!

    • Unfortunately not from campus but it will either be from Oakridge Station.

    • Remember that you have to be 19+ to volunteer

FIRST UNITED COMMUNITY MEAL| FEB 26 |
  • Date/Time: Feb. 26, Sunday at 9 AM – 1PM
  • Location: First United Church, 320 East Hastings Street
  • We are organizing a community meal at in Vancouver’s downtown East Side with First United Church!
  • Task involved will be:
    • Preparing lunch (cutting, peeling, plating, etc)
    • Serving lunch with smiles
    • A bit of clean up (especially dishwashing)
    • Don’t worry about being bored at the event. I assure you it’ll be quite busy 🙂

CLUBS DAY BOOTH SIGN-UP | JAN 18-20 |
  • Clubs Day is happening this week from Jan.18-20!
  • Rotaract will be having its own booth in section I-9 in the lower level Agora
  • We need your help manning the booth to offer any interested students with information about our club and register any potential new members to our mailing list

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE MEETING| JAN 18 | 
  • There will be a fundraising committee meeting on Jan 18 at 5:00 pm, in the Rotaract Office (Room 3302H) in the Nest.
  • Everyone is welcome to come and discuss potential January fundraisers. We will also discuss the Gala event happening at the end of the term.
  • Please bring your ideas and let’s plan some excellent fundraisers!
 
VARIETY SHOW OF HEARTS TELETHON | FEB 12 |
  • Variety’s Show of Hearts Telethon is happening on Feb. 12 from 9:00 am-11:00 pm where we will be collecting pledges and answering calls!
  • Proceeds will be going to The Children’s Charity which “provide help and hope to children who have special needs and fund organizations that provide support and services to children in the province.”
  • As of now we don’t have transportation going there organized and we do need to be there at 8 am
  • Also, you have to be at least 19 years old to participate
  • Date/Time: Feb.12 (9:00 am – 11:00pm)

Minutes – November 20th

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE TRIP UPDATES
It’s decided! This year we will be helping at the Wafula clinic in Uganda for our international service trip. Deadlines for being able to take part in this trip are coming soon so make sure to take note of these dates:
  • December 1st: non refundable deposit of $472.75
  • December 8th: non-refundable deposit of $1239.76
  • Our meeting this week will be on Friday the 25th at 4:00pm in the Woodward library room 20-C – Lower Level
  • We will be discussing more specifics of our trip including potential sponsoring as well as the itinerary details
 
LACE UP FOR KIDS ROTARACT TEAM | NOV. 24 |
  • Event Date/Time: Nov. 24th 6-11pm
  • We will be going to the event set up by UBC Recreation called Lace Up for Kids as a group to represent Rotaract.
  • Lace Up for Kids is a fundraising event for research towards cures for rare diseases,  $5 donation would be required of participants
  • Our team will be meeting first at the NEST at 5:30pm to head over there as a group
  • To sign up just fill out the google form. We hope to see you all there!
MISSION POSSIBLE | NOV. 26 |
  • Power Breakfast | 8:30-11:00am |
  • UBC Rotaract will be helping serve power breakfast. Volunteers are asked to come a little bit earlier, 8:15 am, for some prep work.
  • Coffee House | 12:00 – 1:30pm |
  • IF that’s a little bit early for you, you can also help serve coffee and snacks during their coffee house.
  • For this we ask volunteers to come at 11:30 am for prep work. There will be clean up until 2 pm.
  • Aside from setting the tables/plates, handing out food and cleaning up, we will also have the chance to talk and chill with the guests and hear about their interesting experience living in the DTES.
  • There are only 4 spots left so please fill out the google form AND the facebook event to secure your spot!
RED CROSS CLOTHING DRIVE | NOV. 26 |
  • Date/Time: Nov. 26, 10am
  • UBC Red Cross’ “Cover the Cold” will be handing out clothes to people in the downtown east side.
  • You’ll be walking around and handing out the clothing donations as you go by. You can come here instead if you don’t want to wake up too early for Power Breakfast!

CARE PACKAGE ASSEMBLY SOCIAL | NOV. 28 |
  • Date/Time: Nov. 28, 5:30PM
  • Location: The Math Building, Room 102
  • Finals are coming and UBC rotaract is looking to help! We will be making care packages for finals season and need your help to put them together next week.
  • Care packages may include tissues, tea, sticky notes, chocolate and more. All proceeds will be going towards the Wafula Health Clinic.
  • We hope to see you there!
KIWASSA BREAKFAST WITH SANTA | DEC. 3 |
  • Date/Time: Dec.3, 8:30am-12:30pm
  • We’re looking for 5 volunteers to go to Kiwassa and help give smiles to children while they have “Breakfast with Santa“!
  • You could be involved with either food-related duties (set-up/prep food, refilling juice, cleaning up) or directly interacting with the children, leading the games, escorting the kids to get their gifts from Santa, singing carols, etc).
  • Volunteers are expected to come at 8:30 am and stay until 12:30 pm.

  • Rotaractors from across the district will be selling 50/50 tickets at the Vancouver Giants game at the Langley Events Center to fundraise for the Polio Plus Campaign.

COMMUNITY SERVICE: TRICK OR EAT
  • Date/Time: Monday, October 31
  • In collaboration with UBC’s Meal Exchange, we’ll be going around Vancouver house to house dressed in Halloween costumes asking for non-perishable goods and/or monetary donations!
  • Finalized details will be sent out in a couple of weeks and volunteer sign up instructions will be available next week. Hope to see you all there!
 
FUNDRAISING: BAKE SALE
  • The first fund raising event of the 2016 school year is going to be a bake sale!
  • The bake sale will happen in the nest during the first week of November.

Meeting Minutes – November 17

Hello Rotaractor,

Here is an update from Monday’s meeting:

Dinner and Bowling Social THIS SATURDAY!

  • To celebrate the coming of the holidays, Rotaract invites you to dine and bowl with us on November 22nd! The restaurant in mind is Kojima Sushi located at 1834 Commercial Drive at 7pm. For those commuting from UBC, we’ll be meeting at 6:15pm at the bus loop. The bowling alley we’ll be going to isGrandview Lanes at 2195 Commercial Drive, and bowling begins at 9pm. Hope to see you there!

International Trip

  • The date for the trip is April 30th- May 10th, 2015. The projects that will be worked on are Vision screening and Library setup in public schools in Kathmandu.
  • The DEADLINE to sign up is December 1st. Sign up only if certain about going. You can sign up by following THIS LINK
  • There was a committee meeting on November 20th at 6pm in ANGU 491B.If you are not getting any emails from Dafna but would like to, emailubcrotaractinternational@gmail.com and you will be added to the mailing list. You can email your questions, concerns and suggestions regarding this trip.

Community Service

  • Breakfast with Santa will be happening December 6th at Kiwassa from 8:30-12:30. They’re only looking for 3-4 volunteers, so please email Emma and Charlotte at ubcrotaractcommunityservice@gmail.com if you would like to sign up.
  • We would also like to give a massive thank you to everyone who made the soup kitchen a huge success! Everyone’s enthusiasm and hard work was what really made the day a lot of fun.
  • If you would like to contribute more to community service initiatives within the Club, please join our committee, where the main discussing and planning of events will happen at these meetings. Special thanks to Steven Zhang and Simran Samra for coming forward with such awesome ideas!

1. “Home” Screening and Discussion

There is a call for volunteers. A few of us will meet this week to discuss the logistics of the event. If you would like to be at this meeting and/or help on the day of the event, e-mail Miguel at rotaract.vancouver@gmail.com
2. Community Service
Mission Possible was a huge success, we had a lot of volunteers come out and had lots of fun getting to know members of the Downtown Eastside Community over coffee and breakfast.
Variety Show of Hearts Telethon on February 15 from 10:00am-12:00am. Rides will be provided, and please note that this is a 19+ event due to BCLC regulations.
Please email Emma and Charlotte at ubcrotaractcommunityservice@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering at the telethon. There are only a limited number of spots, so they will be doing a random draw if there is lots of interest.
The next community service committee meeting will be held tomorrow (Tuesday) January 13 at 5:00 pm in Irving room 316.
3. Rotaract Mentorship Program

This is a program where a Rotaractor will be matched with an Interactor (high school student) as a mentor. There is already interest from Interactors

5. District Updates | Events

World Help Rotary
Established in 1992 by the Rotary 5040 District, the Rotary clubs developed a relationship with hospitals in Kiev, Ukraine. Due to their need for medical supplies, the Vancouver club has been involved with the donation of medical supplies since 1993.
As of 2012, the project has donated 100 Million dollars worth of medical equipment and is still going strong.

District Social | This Saturday!

Get ready for an epic start of the year on Saturday, January 31. Spots are filling up fast though.

6:00pm – 10:30pm – Potluck/Socializing/Dancing
10:30pm – late – GASTOWN: THE BOURBON! (50 West Cordova) – Danny W (our Club VP) will ride the mechanical bull. Bring your cameras for this.

Fundraising Committee | Updates
Call for Volunteers to help us out with Marketing the 28th March Silent Auction Fundraiser ‘United We Dine’. Please join our Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1504659599784179/) for updates and ways to help.
Meeting at 3:00pm on Friday (January 30) – opp. the Starbucks in the SUB to go around West 4th and collect donation items for the silent auction from shops selling antiques, art & gift. We’ll provide a spiel and a letter asking for donation to everyone interested in joining us.
Also please ask your friends & family if they would like to donate gift cards or gifts to be used for the silent auction.
Please let us know via email if you know any friends or groups who could volunteer to perform some sort of dance/music/singing at our fundraiser.

Values in Perspective Workshops | Join the committee
Over 180 people showed up for Tuesday’s (January 20) screening of “Home” and panel on sustainability! Thanks to everyone who made this day happen!
As a result, UBC has awarded us the “Connect to Community Grant” to put together a number of workshops from February-April on sustainability
Topics will include: green technologies, environmental/ecological economics, forestry/conservation, redefining international aid, social sustainability, food security, corporate social responsibility. The workshops will be filmed and streamed live.

Community Service | Call for Volunteers
Variety Show of Hearts Telethon – The telethon will be on February 15 from 10:00am-12:00pm. If you are interested in volunteering please email Emma and Charlotte ASAP as we will be picking names to fill the seven spots before the end of the week.
UBC Blood for life Club – On February 12 they will be holding a stem cell drive and signing people up for blood donations. This is not a Rotaract event, however if you would like to volunteer or help with promotion please email Adi Jariwala for more information at adityajariwala06@gmail.com.
Future Events – In our committee discussion we talked about possible future events, including removal of invasive species and volunteering at the UBC Hospice. We will send out further updates once we have more information.

International Trip | Updates
There will be fundraisers for the international trip in order to provide supplies related to child eye care in Nepal
Fundraiser will include an ethical coffee bean sale and a large scale fundraiser. Stay tuned for details!

Professional Development (PD) Conference | New Date
